What Is Shoulder Pain?

The main shoulder joint is a ball-and-socket joint. It’s called this because the top of the upper arm bone is shaped like a ball. This ball fits into the shoulder blade bone, which acts as the socket, giving your shoulder a wide range of movement. Because there are so many parts to the shoulder, there are many reasons why your shoulder might hurt. You might injure it in a fall or accident, or you could have damaged it at home by overworking the joint. Sometimes, shoulder pain comes from a condition like arthritis, or the source of your pain can even stem from other parts of your body.

Rotator cuff injuries are particularly common, often resulting from repetitive overhead motions. This group of muscles and tendons stabilizes the shoulder and allows for various movements. When injured it can cause significant pain and weakness, while continuing to use it can cause further damage. This is why it’s important to find out why your shoulder hurts and get treatment as soon as possible.

What Are The symptoms of Shoulder Pain?

The shoulder’s ball-and-socket joint gives you a great range of motion, but it comes at the expense of stability. The shoulder joint gets dislocated more often than any other joint in the body. The symptoms of shoulder pain can vary widely depending on the underlying cause, but some common signs include:

  • Localized Pain – pain in the shoulder itself, which can be sharp, dull, or throbbing. It may worsen with certain movements or activities.
  • Stiffness and Weakness – the shoulder may feel stiff, making it hard to move the arm comfortably. Likewise, reduced strength in the shoulder muscles, makes it difficult to lift objects or perform certain movements.
  • Night Pain – shoulder pain can be particularly uncomfortable at night, making it difficult to sleep on the affected side. This can make it difficult to achieve a restful night’s sleep, leading to lethargy and low mood during the day.
  • Numbness or Tingling – if nerves are affected, you may experience numbness or tingling sensations in the arm, shoulder, or hand.

Lack of movement after a shoulder injury is usually due to pain however it’s important to state that resting the shoulder is not an effective long-term solution. Shoulder pain can be a big problem and affects many things that you love to do, such as throwing, working, traveling, hunting, or fishing.

At MORGAiN Physical Therapy, we know that you may be feeling distressed, defeated, or frustrated, but there are many things you can do to treat your pain naturally and get you back to a high-quality life.

What Is Our Approach To Fixing and treating Shoulder Pain?

If you’re suffering from shoulder pain, you’ve probably tried many things to alleviate your shoulder pain, such as pain medicine, injections, and have contemplated surgery, and you’ve likely seen many different providers who have given you different answers to your problem but these rarely give you long-term relief.

At MORGAiN Physical Therapy, we take a different approach than many other clinics in our area. We are not a standard PT practice, our treatment plans are not cookie-cutter or generic. We treat each patient as an individual and therefore recommend a treatment approach that is bespoke and will help you achieve your own goals.

The first step we take is to complete a comprehensive assessment to identify the specific cause of the shoulder pain. This thorough evaluation includes everything from examining your medical history to performing physical examinations assessing your range of motion, strength, and posture.

Based on the assessment, we will develop a personalized treatment plan which may include the following components:

  • Strengthening Exercises – target the muscles around the shoulder, particularly the rotator cuff and scapular stabilizers, to improve stability and support.
  • Manual Therapy – we will help you maintain as much range of motion as possible and will help you reduce your pain. We may use a combination of range-of-motion exercises and hands-on techniques to maintain shoulder movement.
  • Education – We will match your treatment activities and intensity to your symptoms, and educate you on the appropriate use of the affected arm. We will teach proper posture to avoid unnecessary strain on the shoulder and offer advice on ways to modify activities and workspaces to reduce shoulder stress.
  • Home Exercise Program – a crucial component of any treatment plan is to consider what a home exercise regimen will look like. Your treatment doesn’t end when you walk out of the door, we provide tailored exercises for you to perform at home to maintain progress and prevent future injuries.
  • Ongoing Support and Maintenance – Recovery from shoulder pain is a journey, and we are committed to supporting you every step of the way. Regular follow-up sessions will allow us to monitor your progress, adjust your treatment plan as needed, and ensure you continue to progress with your goals.

At MORGAiN Physical Therapy, we are trained in various techniques to effectively treat shoulder pain. With early diagnosis and treatment, you can achieve a speedy and long-lasting recovery. Our goal is to assess, treat, and equip you with essential practices for improving your well-being.
